Oculus Rift stock is, unfortunately, impossible to buy due to the company being owned by Facebook. To buy stock in Facebook stock symbol FB or any other publicly traded company, you first need to open an online broker account.

Oculus VR has opened for pre-orders but it is not the only company exploring virtual reality.

Sony is developing the PlayStation VR Morpheus but a hard release date for the new headset is yet unknown. The HTC Vive Steam VR is a collaboration between HTC and Valve Co. People who have tried demo units of the HTC Vive have given it high praise but it also has yet to announce a release date.

Augmented reality is a similar to virtual reality but has more possible business uses. The best known player in this space is Microsoft that is developing the HoloLens and it has been shown on stage during several events.

However, a price and release date is yet unknown for the HoloLens at the time I write this. Virtual reality and augmented reality may be huge in the future and you might want to buy stock in companies developing the technologies.

You can buy shares of Sony SNE , Microsoft MSFT , or Facebook FB on the US markets. HTC can be bought on the Taiwanese market and Samsung on South Koreas stock exchange but Valve is a private company.

This means there is no way to directly invest in any company whose whole business is either VR or AR. Oculus Rift VR will be shipping the first half of so buying stock in Facebook is a way to invest in the first main platform that will set the tone for the industry.

Keep in mind though, no virtual reality platform will materially add to any companies earnings for quite some time, perhaps even years.
