Originally used by floor traders as a market forecasting tool, pivot points required only a few simple calculations yet continuously provided strong signals of times of possible support or resistance in the market.

Where does the information come from to create the pivot points? Each day the market has an open, high, a low, and a close for every individual market session.

It is from this data that the pivot points are created. What makes a pivot point so valuable? Pivot points are relatively popular due to the fact that they are predictive indicators rather and lagging indicators. Pivot points utilize previous information to predict and draw lines where the market shows potential for encountering support or resistance. Due to the fact that pivot points are so widely respected, traders generally buy and sell around these areas which in turn makes the pivot points that much more effective and reliable for areas of market movement.

There is a formula to calculate pivot points however; I have included an indicator that will due all of the boring math for you. Never the less here is the formula: So how does one trade with pivot points?

There are multiple ways to trade with pivot points, but I will provide a very easy to use and simple method as an example: After determining where levels of support and resistance are according to the pivot point formula or indicator, pay close attention to price in relation to S1 and R1. S1 and R1 are generally viewed as the most reliable of all the support and resistance levels due to the simple fact that once price moves beyond these zones it is generally over bought or over spent.
